Frequently Asked Questions
Our estimator uses real negotiated rates from hospital price transparency filings and CMS data. Select a procedure and location, enter your insurance details, and we show the full price range (P10 to P90), median costs, Medicare benchmarks, and cheaper alternatives nearby.
P10 is the 10th percentile price — 90% of facilities charge more than this. P90 is the 90th percentile — only 10% charge more. The range between them shows you the realistic spread of prices for this procedure in your area. If you're quoted a price above P90, you're paying more than almost everyone else.
Our estimates are based on real hospital pricing data, but your actual cost may vary depending on your specific insurance plan, the complexity of your case, and any additional services. Use this as a starting point and confirm costs with your provider and insurer.
Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) are outpatient facilities that typically charge significantly less than hospitals for the same procedure. If your procedure can be done at an ASC, you may save 30-60% compared to a hospital setting. We compare both when data is available.
If you're uninsured, we show cash/self-pay prices and connect you with financial assistance programs. Many hospitals are required by law to provide charity care, and you may qualify for discounts of 40-100% based on your income. We also help you generate negotiation letters and request Good Faith Estimates.
Medicare rates are set by CMS based on the actual cost of providing care, plus a margin. They serve as a useful benchmark — if a hospital charges 3× Medicare, they have significant markup. Many financial advisors recommend using Medicare rates as a starting point for negotiations.
